There are a wide variety of cards available. Here are a few examples.
- R4 which includes several variations - R4i, R4i 3DS
- AceKard
- DS TWO
Homebrew cards can be used for many things including:
- Nintendo DS Homebrew Applications
- Playing DS game cartridge backups all from one cartridge.
- Using a DS Lite with Emulator software for older games, such as NES, and SNES.
- Turn a DS Lite into a media player for music or video
- Nintendo DS Download Station
The card I chose was an R4 card which supports an SD card with a maximum size of 32 GB. I purchased a 32 GB Sandisk SD card to use with the R4 card.
If you purchase an R4 card with an SD card, the files can be copied from one SD card to another. If you don't purchase with an SD card, make sure there is a web link to download the kernel software for the R4 card onto the SD card.
The folder contents of the root of the SD card should look like this when the kernel software has been loaded.
Copy your ROM backups to the root of the SD card. ROM Backups have the extension .NDS and when a game is played and a save file generated, the save file has the extension .SAV
The file extension .NDS is also a common extension for Homebrew applications. Always follow installation instructions when installing homebrew. Some applications require files to be copied to the root folder and others will need files copied into subfolders.
It is a good idea to keep a backup copy of the files on the SD card.
